Free Webinar: COVID and Racism: A difficult intersection to interpret and translate

Friday, July 31, 2020

Hello Members & Colleagues,

In light of COVID-19 and the drastic changes it has wrought upon the world, and social movements against racial and ethnic discrimination such as the BLM, Words Without Borders is offering a free yet very timely webinar for interpreters and translators on how to better facilitate cross-cultural communication and work to support intercultural dialogues.
Speaker: Dr. Alice Chan, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Centre for Civic Religious Literacy.
Date & Time: Friday, Aug 7, 5-7PM (MT) via Zoom
About the Workshop:
Have you struggled to interpret or translate a doctor’s question to a religious patient? Or, have you ever had to correct a racist statement towards your client in your own translation or interpretation? Or, have you unknowingly translated or interpreted a racist statement without realizing it? How does this affect your own mental health? These are common questions and struggles that interpreters and translators have been facing this year as they support clients through COVID-19 and the racism clients may experience.

To engage and speak openly about these issues, this two-hour dialogue will include small- group and large-group confidential discussions. To develop an understanding on these issues, this interactive webinar will discuss: different forms of racism (behavioural and systemic), microaggressions, intersectional lenses, and some statistical data on anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, anti-Muslim, anti-Semitic, and anti-Asian racism before and during COVID-19. These aspects of racism will be discussed as they relate to religion, spirituality, and non-religion as they may or may not come up in the conversation.

Click on the link below to register for this two-hour event. You will need to RSVP to confirm attendance, and you will receive an email with the Zoom webinar invitation closer to the event.

We look forward to seeing you and engaging together in this dialogue!
