PROFESSIONAL INTERPRETATION

What is Interpretation?

In every day parlance, we use the word “translation” to mean both language translation and interpretation.   This usage is not very accurate.  In reality there is a very distinct difference between the two.  Translation is the communication of the meaning of a source-language written text by means of an equivalent target-language written text.  Interpretation is the facilitating of oral communication, either simultaneously or consecutively, between users of different languages by delivering, as faithfully as possible, the original message from source into target language.

Interpretation Contexts/Specialisation

A very competent interpreter may have the skills to perform both simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, but specific contextual knowledge and subject matter expertise are often required which then leads to interpreting specialisation.  Some of the specialised areas of practice include court interpreting, medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Professional Interpretation

Many years of training are required to become a fully proficient interpreter.  Professional interpretation is NOT an informal practice such as interpreting performed by friends, family members, children, or other persons who do not have the competencies and qualifications or who do not follow a relevant Code of Ethics.   Professional interpreters are ones who have obtained the proper education/training to provide quality interpreting services, are held accountable for their professionalism, adhere to a strict Code of Ethics and are continuously honing their skills to stay abreast of the latest trends in the profession.

Using a professional interpreter is particularly important when communicating with people with little or no English language skills in the following situations:

  • Compliance with existing rules/laws is required
  • Sensitive issues
  • Explaining clients’ rights and obligations
  • In times of stress
  • The information to be discussed is complex and detailed

Why Use a Professional Interpreter?

If it is clear that an interpreter is required, then it is strongly recommended that a professional interpreter be used.  Using a bilingual person who is untrained in interpreting may risk compromising accuracy, neutrality and confidentiality.

Some of the dire consequences which may result from the use of a non-professional or un-qualified interpreter may include misdiagnosis of a medical condition, inadequate legal representation, denied access to important services, inaccurate dissemination of critical information, unsuccessful business dealings and/or diplomatic conflicts.
