10:00   First Workshop – Keeping Our Minds Sharp for Continued Professional and Personal Success

Presented by: Benny Loi

It’s all in your mind!

One thing we all have in common with Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci and Confucius: a brain. You may not be gifted with the natural talents of a genius, but you can train your mind to become smarter as you mature and stay perpetually young in the process. To interpret in court, you need to stay focused while walking a tightrope. You need stamina to endure marathon trials that last for weeks, even months. In conference interpreting, you have to think on your feet for what seems an eternity each time. As translators, you need the physical and mental discipline to grind out voluminous documents for clients who “need them yesterday”. When you do transcripts, you need to be sharp to catch the nuances and hurdle potential landmines intact. Usain Bolt, the Fastest Man in the World, trains in the sprints and cross-trains in other disciplines every day. To overcome the daunting challenges in our professions, it only makes sense to train our mind and cross-train with healthy habits. For many years, I have been doing a dozen mental exercises regularly to activate various parts of the brain and integrating an equal number of routines in my lifestyle to keep my brain in top form, minimize stress and defy aging. I would like to share my ideas with you.

Presented by: Bekircan (John) Tahberer

Exposure to job opportunities can be very challenging, especially in the beginning and some translators/interpreters find it very useful to work with translation agencies. However many translators and interpreters usually don’t know how to approach and work with translation agencies.  The following topics will be covered:

  • How to get hired by an agency?
  • How to choose the right agency?
  • How to avoid scams?

After a brief presentation, participants will engage in an interactive discussion/FAQ session.
